CMI2 Wilderness Medicine Program Returns in May

FORT ANDREW – Following the initial successes of its previous programs, the Civil-Military Innovation Institute (CMI2) is set to host the next iteration of its Wilderness Medicine program from May 13-17 at the CMI2 Adaptive Experimentation Facility at Fort Andrew.

The five-day CMI2 Wilderness Medicine EMT-Basic Refresher Course is designed to enhance the skills of emergency medical technicians, first responders, and medical professionals in challenging and remote environments. Participants will expand existing medical knowledge via both classroom settings and onsite demonstrations, culminating in a real-world, hands-on, 24-hour event patient rescue scenario.

The curriculum focuses on recognizing, treating, and preventing common injuries and illnesses encountered in outdoor environments, enabling responders to adapt urban medical techniques to austere conditions.

“The ability to provide emergency medical care in unpredictable and resource-limited conditions is critical for responders in wilderness and disaster situations,” said Walter “Wally” Hatfield, CMI2 Vice President of Training & Experimentation. “Our wilderness medicine course ensures participating EMTs have the necessary skills and confidence to handle emergencies when traditional medical resources are unavailable.”

In the wilderness and austere environments, one likely has minimal access to equipment, and the ability to improvise is crucial. CMl2 strives to provide scenarios one may face while attending a medical emergency in an austere environment.
