The summer marked by innovation and hands-on learning continues at Fort Andrew as we officially welcomed the second and final cohort of CMI2 Ignite interns to the Adaptive Experimentation Facility (AEF).
On Friday, June 13, the second and final group of Ignite interns began work in a variety of roles at the AEF, including support for experimentation, technology integration, and community involvement and development. Specifically, students will support training and experimentation events, site development and facility construction, strategic partnerships, community outreach, STEM engagement opportunities, and other engagements in Clay County and the surrounding areas.
The Summer 2025 program includes 22 interns, with 13 new hires and nine returning interns from the 2024 cohort. The interns will work throughout the summer until August 8 with the annual Family Celebration Day.
The CMI2 Ignite program strategically incorporates opportunities for interns to learn and grow as professionals while creating an innovative workforce under CMI2.
“This is the third year of our Clay County internship program, and we could not be more pleased with the success,” said Walter “Wally” Hatfield, Vice President of Training and Experimentation. “It’s been such a successful experience, and looking ahead, these students get hands-on training in a fast-paced, real-world environment that really helps prepare them for what’s next.”
In 2025, CMI2 is proud to help students gain valuable real-world skills in a fast-paced, professional setting. What began in 2023 as a small opportunity for Clay County students has become truly impactful. Now called Ignite, the program delivers STEM-focused, hands-on learning experiences in innovation and national defense right here in West Virginia.
“We’ve seen interns leave this program, go away to college, and become leaders on campus and succeed in athletics,” said Walter Hatfield. “We are grateful for the support from Clay County Schools and this entire community.”
This internship opportunity is made possible through the incredible collaboration and support of leaders and partners who believe in the power of investing in the next generation. Special thanks our state-level partners, including the Career Connections Paid Work Experience Program through the Workforce Development Board of the Mid-Ohio Valley and the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services.
Together, we’re showing the world what’s possible when we invest in emerging talent at home.
