Community Matters.

Community Matters.

September 16, 2024

We’ve talked about our commitment to Clay, but we know actions speak louder than words. In that case, we’d like to give a quick update on our latest community service project.

Build it, and they will come.

From the Elk River Trail to the Buffalo Creek Trail, biking is definitely a draw for visitors and a local favorite activity for Clay County.

In late August and September, our Clay County team supported downtown improvements in the Town of Clay to develop a new bicycle rental shop as part of a new grant for the Clay County Health Department. Angela Brown, MSN, FNP-C, Nurse Practitioner with the Clay County Health Department, led the project.

CMI2 team members from the Adaptive Experimentation Facility at Fort Andrew in Lizemores supported the clean-up and improvement efforts.

Ongoing Impact

As the CMI2 investment in Clay County grows, with the development of the new base camp facility in Lizemores and the new structure under construction, so too does our commitment to developing and impacting the economy throughout the area.

Here’s a quick recap of our community impact accomplishments so far this year:

  • Mountaineer Food Bank (Community Outreach) – Once a month, employees volunteer at the Mountaineer Food Bank food drive in various areas around Clay County.
  • Middle School Drone Team (STEM Education) – Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, the Clay County Middle School Drone Competition team was supported by CMI2 via its partnership with STARBASE, a congressionally authorized U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) civil-military program. STARBASE is 100% federally funded and managed by the West Virginia Military Authority and hosted by the West Virginia National Guard. Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, CMI2 and STARBASE will support Clay County Schools as the competition drone program expands to include CCHS students.
  • Make Clay County Shine (Community Outreach) – CMI2 partnered with CCHS and County Commission volunteers to fill 150 bags of litter and debris along the roadways in Clay.
  • Summer STEM Program (STEM Education) – During summer school, the CMI2 Makerspace team traveled to CCHS once a week to teach a STEM course to Middle and High School students.
  • 4-H (STEM Education) – CMI2 supported STEM education courses at Clay County’s 4-H camp to demonstrate the technology used at Fort Andrew.
  • Town of Clay Independence Day (Community Outreach) – CMI2 partners with the Town of Clay to support a celebration of Independence Day, including fireworks.
