Leadership development is a critical component of the CMI2 internship experience. Throughout the summer, interns at the CMI2 Adaptive Experimentation Facility (AEF) at Fort Andrew in Lizemores, WV, have heard from multiple speakers during our weekly Friday Forum series discussing different facets of the leadership experience.
During Week 7 of the 2024 internship program, the group traveled to the West Virginia State Capitol Complex in Charleston as part of the AEF internship program’s leadership development initiatives.
CMI2 Vice President for Training and Experimentation Walter “Wally” Hatfield told the team at the program’s start in late May that honing and developing practical leadership skills was a priority for the summer’s experience. The interns were fortunate that the leadership focus included visiting West Virginia’s capitol complex.
As part of the visit, the team enjoyed guided tours of the Culture Center, the West Virginia State Museum, the State Archives, and the Governor’s Mansion. Lunch was served in the Grand Hall of the Culture Center.
Discussions on leadership and a question-and-answer session about the future of Clay County were led by Clay County’s own Roger Hanshaw, Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates. Speaker Hanshaw joined the group for lunch and then personally gave a tour of both the Senate and House Chambers.
While visiting the House floor, the group enjoyed participating in a mock debate and voting exercise led by the Speaker.
Afterward, Speaker Hanshaw welcomed the group to his office for further discussion about getting involved in Clay County and making a difference in West Virginia.
“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” – General Douglas MacArthur
