Pathfinder Warfighter Innovation Chief (PWIC) – (MacDill AFB/USCENTCOM HQ)

The Civil-Military Innovation Institute, Inc. (CMI2) is seeking a Warfighter Innovation Chief to support the Army Pathfinder Program. This full-time position is a key role, reporting directly to CMI2’s Pathfinder Program Manager.

The Civil-Military Innovation Institute Inc. (CMI2) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that supports United States Department of Defense (DoD) activities to build a civil-military innovation workforce optimized to advance national security technologies and to align the work of innovators from universities and non-traditional technology companies with the activities of the DoD and public safety communities.

The Pathfinder Program will strategically engage top academic institutions nationwide to team them with Soldiers in small, integrated teams focused on solving technical problems in a highly integrated manner.  These projects will yield discoveries and future outcomes, by extracting creativity from warfighters, students and faculty (working together) that have not been exposed to DoD (Army) challenges and problems.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Program lead and project manager for US Central Command (CENTCOM) Headquarters (Contractor)
  • Directly Responsible for problem sourcing and data collection from the tactical-level Soldier in order to supply program solvable challenges
  • Establish processes to identify critical needs of CENTCOM Soldiers that could be addressed by academic partners or private entities in a proficient manner
  • Manage prototyping and solution programming executed by support academic institutions and R&D incubators (commercial) in our area of responsibility (AOR)
  • Facilitate commercialization opportunities and mentor entrepreneurs associated with successfully delivered technology prototypes specific to the Army and DoD
  • Direct, report, and assist the Pathfinder Program Manager in the development of methodology for enhancement of academic solutioning for Soldier problem sets
  • Produce problem source and Pathfinder program reports and deliverables in a professional and timely manner
  • Build and maintain strong network relationships with units in the CENTCOM AOR and CENTCOM HQ
  • Work collaboratively with a diverse team that includes engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs) and finance/business managers
  • Work with Soldiers to define emerging technical areas of interest and build programs to enhance Soldiers’ technical expertise in those areas
  • Work with university partners to develop Army-focused academic programs
  • Work with Army stakeholders to identify strategies for transition of successful prototypes to follow-on programs

Actively engage with other DoD, Intelligence Community, foreign defense establishments and industrial entities in assigned AOR to collaborate on areas where early Soldier engagements can reduce technical, performance or schedule risk and enable new Army capabilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in scientific or technical discipline
  • Demonstrated experience or strong knowledge with tactical and operational military units
  • Must display strong team player mentality and high emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated experience or capability for leading research/product development teams that ultimately delivered a fielded system to the warfighter
  • 3+ year’s experience in applied R&D preferred
  • Knowledge of MIL and commercial product design
  • Proven ability to manage projects and teams
  • Proven ability to succeed in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Comfortable taking initiative and seeking out responsibility
  • Secret Clearance (eligible)

Travel Requirement:  25% (estimated)
