Description
The Civil-Military Innovation Institute, Inc. (CMI2) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for its Design Innovation Group (DIG). The position is full-time and reports directly to CMI2’s DIG Director.
CMI2 is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that supports United States Department of Defense (DoD) activities to build a civil-military innovation workforce optimized to advance national security technologies and to align the work of innovators from universities and non-traditional technology companies with the activities of the DoD and public safety communities.
Essential Position Functions
The Mechanical Engineer will be part of the DIG team of forward thinkers, innovators, designers and engineers working to find solutions to the growing needs of the DoD and public safety communities we serve.
The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Lead engineering efforts in the Research and Development (R&D), and Engineering Teams.
- Be able to work with a diverse group of skill sets and personalities to align expectations on what will be accomplished while fostering a motivating and positive work environment. Teams consist of Managers, Engineers, Designers, Fabricators, Assemblers and Mechanics.
- Recognize innovation opportunities and evolve design from concept to successful application.
- Must have a “can do” attitude and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Review all final drawings and layouts with high quality, accuracy, detail and precision prior to release, including concept drawings from all designers and engineers.
- Check tolerances, assembly interference, and required clearance.
- Develop, check and revise all bill of materials for accuracy from all designers and engineers.
- Work with manufacturing companies to assure highest quality and successful performance of machinery.
- Assist in final assembly and review parts for accuracy.
- Work with stakeholders on flow charts for accurate timelines, deliverables and milestones to ensure project completion is communicated, agreed upon, and executed effectively balancing cost, performance and schedule.
- Develop and present Power Point slides that demonstrate design elements during Design Reviews internally and with customers and stakeholders.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- Must be experienced with SolidWorks CAD software to develop 3D drawings of new components, assemblies, and concepts.
- Must be experienced in performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on structural designs to include material selection, vibration analysis, thermal analysis and optimization studies.
- Must be able to perform mathematics and calculations and use measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, etc.
- Must be proficient in assigning drawing numbers to various drawing levels and developing indentured drawing lists.
- Must have a solid understanding of drafting techniques and engineering terminology.
- Must have a solid understanding of how things are properly designed, checked, machined (or fabricated) and assembled.
- Technical writing capabilities
- Be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Fabrication and machining background is a plus.
- Ability to acquire a security clearance
Travel Requirement: 20% (estimated)

Salary Range: $82,000 – $127, 000
